Ben Quilty and Criss Canning, a celebrated still life painter, come together to participate in an art collecting exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). The exhibition, titled "Collecting Art: An Artist's Perspective," is a collaboration between the NGV and the two artists, who will showcase their personal art collections alongside their own works. This unique exhibition will provide a rare insight into the relationship between an artist and their collection, and how this relationship influences their creative practice.
Ben Quilty is one of Australia's most celebrated contemporary artists, renowned for his powerful and emotive portraits. He is also a passionate art collector, with a particular interest in contemporary Australian art.
Quilty's collection features works from some of Australia's most exciting emerging artists, as well as established names such as Tracey Moffatt, Gordon Bennett, and Fiona Hall.
"I've always been interested in the relationship between an artist and their collection," says Quilty. "For me, collecting is about learning from other artists, discovering new ideas and ways of thinking, and being inspired to push my own practice in new directions."
Criss Canning is an established still life painter, known for her highly detailed and meticulously crafted works. She is also an avid collector of antique ceramics and glass, which feature prominently in her own still life compositions. Canning's collection includes a wide range of antique pieces, from Chinese porcelain to European glassware.
"Collecting has always been an important part of my creative practice," says Canning. "I love the way that objects can spark ideas and inspire new compositions. My collection is like a treasure trove of inspiration, and I'm excited to share it with visitors to the exhibition."
The exhibition will feature a range of works from both artists, including some of Quilty's powerful portraits and Canning's meticulously crafted still lifes. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the artists' personal collections and learn about their significance to the artists' practice.
" Collecting Art : An Artist's Perspective" promises to be a unique and inspiring exhibition, offering a rare insight into the world of art collecting and the relationship between an artist and their collection.
