Whenever Gold is the topic in any US History public lecture, it is for sure that California would be one of the centers for the discussion. This is simply because it was in Sutter’s Creek California that gold was discovered by James Marshall which in turn led to the famous Gold Rush of 1800. The gold rush that took place during this decade lured more than 300,000 people from all over the US to try their luck in mining. Before the gold rush, there were only about 10,000 non-native Americans living in California but as soon as the news of the discovery of gold broke out in 1848, around 6000 people started arriving and by 1849, 90,000 individuals have come to hunt for gold. It was about this time that gold mining adventures California started to rise and it was also during this year that the famous Forty-niners were said to have arrived here. Most people don’t know it but it was not only the local Americans that were enticed by the discovery of gold but also people from all over the world including those from Asia’s Far East. Many gold prospectors did make a lot of money during the rush but ironically it was the traders and businessmen from the east who made more because of the scarcity of mining supplies and bare essentials in California. A very famous remnant that was left by the gold rush of California is a large mining camp called Roaring Camp Mining Co. The mining camp still exists today in California and the company is still very much active in mining. Presently the mining camp contributes a lot to the growth of the US economy and gold mining industry. Aside from it being an active mining site, Roaring Camp Mining Co. has turned a large part of its property into a high end mining camp resort where foreign tourists and local visitors can relish a unique form of outdoor adventures and fun California, such as actually mining for gold. Today the mining camp not only provides raw gold for the country but has given people a new way to spend their vacation time. The camp offers a unique way of spending recreation time because it provides such activities as camping on the Mokulmne River California, one of the best camping site this side of the US. No one can really imagine that once upon a time, this camping site was only reachable by horseback, something that only the Forty-niners can attest to but today’s visitors can easily access this resort camp and experience firsthand the what gold mining is all about.
