Cyber Monday is the first Monday after Thanksgiving which is a major shopping day, since this has become the Christmas kickoff for the online retailers and shoppers. Although it is considered as a major shopping day, but the biggest online shopping of the year is the last day in which customers are guaranteed to receive their packages before Christmas. The term “Cyber Monday”, was used basing on research after online retailers reported a significant increase of 77% - 78% in sales following after Thanksgiving. The term originally started following a press release entitled “’Cyber Monday’ Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year”, made by Shop.org, an organization which is part of the U.S. Trade Association which is National Retail Foundation (NRF). According to the NRF, nearly 100 million Americans shop during Cyber Monday.According to the Press Release made by Scott Silverman, Executive Director of Shop.org, consumers set their sights on online shopping and browsing for holiday gifts which the online retailers will be capitalizing through special promotions and discounts offering. Basing on a Shop.org survey conducted by BIGresearch, a consumer market intelligence firm that provides unique consumer insights that are gathered online, nearly one third of the consumers’ access internet at work to browse and buy holiday gifts. Experts believe that consumers choose to shop online, since they have faster and secure Internet connections at work thus increasing the web traffic. During this time also, the survey found that 36% of online retailers offer sales and special promotions on Thanksgiving Day and some even offer their Black Friday discounts one day ahead on their websites. Basing on the survey, high substantial sales increase in jewelry/ luxury retailers and consumer electronic products were seen while food, beverages and other gourmet retailers’ sales surge above-average.
